"Look after yourself - Brush for Health"
National Smile Month, in its 36th year in 2009, is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation. It takes place every year and it is probably the biggest dental health event in the UK reaching millions of people nationwide. Whilst the campaign itself lasts only a month (17 May - 16 June 09) its messages are valid all year round so we keep featuring it in our news section.
The theme this year focuses on the importance of good dental care for all age groups highlighting the links between oral health and general health. Scientific research makes very strong links between oral health and a number of conditions such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, premature and low birth weight babies.
Lots of dental practices, pharmacies and schools all over the UK participate in the event every year. Although there is an overall improvement in the nation's oral health, worryingly there are areas in the UK with limited access to NHS dentistry and also the high price of dentistry may prove prohibitive for some.
It is imperative that people understand the importance of oral care, and how to improve and maintain it in their everyday lives. The basic principles are brushing with a fluoride toothpaste minimum twice a day, flossing daily and cutting down on the consumption of sugary foods and drinks. You should also attend regular check-ups at your dentist every 6-12 months.
